Smith Story – Pinot Noir

A good Pinot Noir from the Anderson Valley always gives me goosebumps; however, I occasionally find a wine that inspires me, gives me a sense of place, and leaves my palate with a lasting impression. The Smith Story Cellars Helluva Vineyard Pinot Noir does just that.

Helluva Vineyard Pinot Noir is part of Smith Story’s portfolio of single-vineyard wines. The Helluva Vineyards are located just outside the small town of Boonville and extend over 5.5 acres of Russian River refinement. Winemaker Eric Story describes this soft, lush single-vineyard pinot noir as “a classic Anderson Valley wine.”The cooler climate of Anderson Valley contributes to the elegance and restraint of this wine. As a result, this Pinot Noir tastes more like its counterparts from Burgandy rather than those from Napa or the Santa Ynez Valley, where the climate is warmer.

Ripe cherry and cranberry aromas dominate the glass, which is bursting with fruit and exceptional acidity. There is also a hint of wet earth that will add to the wine’s complexity as it ages. It’s light and smooth with hints of cedar and cinnamon mid pallet and just the right amount of tannin to balance it out.

Helluva Pinot sells out every year; the production has gone from four barrels to 500 cases to keep up with demand. However, there is no room for growth since only 5.5 acres of fruit are available, my suggestion,  buy it up as soon as it’s released.
